LCBA Members Raise Over $7,000 for Charity

The Lorain County Bar Association held its first Valentine's Day Ball on February 16, 2008, at DeLuca's Place in the Park.  The Ball was generously sponsored by LorMet Community Federal Credit Union, Community Foundation of Lorain County, National City Bank, Key Private Bank, and First Place Bank.  The Ball was a very important and unique event as all of the proceeds went to the Cy Pres Fund.  The Cy Pres Fund grants money to organizations in Lorain County that assist children in need.  The proceeds from the event totaled over $7,000!

The LCBA was honored to receive over $12,000 in donations for raffle items including a one carat diamond ring from Vandemark Jewelers, a $4,200 ruby and diamond bracelet from Levit Jewelers, a beautiful one-of-a-kind garnet necklace from Nielsen Jewelers, four beautiful watches from Swiss American Jewelers and many other fabulous gifts.

Our silent auction boasted fantastic items such as a round of golf for three with Judge Joseph Cirigliano and lunch at Firestone Country Club, a Swarovski crystal eagle from Peter & Company Jewelers, original paintings by Artists Karen Miraldi, Linda Ashar, Dr. Joan Schiller, and Cargo Jewelers & Gallery, a wine tasting party from The Wine Room, a private party for 12 at Super Suppers, spa packages from Studio 8 Hair Designs & Spa, Mark Kendall Salon & Spa, and the Marengo Luxury Spa, cooking lessons from Laurel Run Cooking School, tickets to the Broadway production of Mary Poppins and a backstage tour by the stage manager courtesy of Gary, Naegele & Theado, vacation homes courtesy of Attorney Robert Gary and Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, scuba diving lessons from Safety Service Divers, 18 holes of golf and dinner for four at Red Tail Golf Club,  Cleveland Indians gift basket and tickets courtesy of Old Republic Title, overnight stays at the Marriott, the Hyatt Regency, Landoll's Mohican Castle, plus Indians tickets, Cleveland Cavs tickets, and many other luxurious gifts.

The evening began with a champagne cocktail hour and hors d’hoeuvres which included an oyster bar, followed by dinner and dancing with incredible music provided by The Motion

The LCBA would like to thank the sponsors and donors for their generosity in helping make this event happen.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Moyer

and the Lorain County Bar Association Take Steps

to Assist the Legal Aid Society of Lorain County

The Lorain County Bar Association, in conjunction with The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland's Lorain County Office, is offering its second free 5.50 hour continuing legal education (CLE) course to its membership in exchange for a pledge to accept at least one referral from Legal Aid and/or work at two of Legal Aid's Brief Advice Clinics.  Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Moyer will participate in this event by providing the keynote address at the luncheon.

The program will be held on June 13, 2008 beginning at 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., at the Spitzer Conference Center.  Lunch will be provided.

The seminar will focus on the unmet legal needs of the low income population.  Specific topics will be announced soon.  Last year's topics included:

  • Current Trends in Social Security
  • Accessing Social Service agencies
  • Recent Changes to the Ohio Consumer Practices Act
  • Domestic Violence
  • Landlord/Tenant Law
  • Avoiding Malpractice When the Military is Involved in Family Law Cases
  • Providing Pro Bono Services

“We are excited to collaborate with the Lorain County Bar Association,” comments Jessica Baggett, managing attorney of Legal Aid’s Lorain County Office.  “This CLE will train pro bono attorneys on current law which affects low-income individuals.”

“Partnering with Legal Aid benefits both the community and our membership,” states Kreig J. Brusnahan, President of the Lorain County Bar Association.  “For far too long, the legal needs of the low income population in Lorain County have not been adequately addressed.  The Legal Aid Society, who for many years has provided legal services to our low income population, is simply unable to meet all of these needs.  Lorain County lawyers have a tradition of giving back to the community.  This is just another example of that..”

The Legal Aid Society’s mission is to secure justice and resolve fundamental problems for those who are low income and vulnerable by providing high quality legal services and working for systemic solutions.  Legal Aid is the law firm for low-income individuals in Northeast Ohio.  The nonprofit law firm has 45 full-time attorneys providing free legal assistance in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Lorain counties.  In addition to its staff, Legal Aid works with hundreds of volunteers.

For more information about the CLE, please call the LCBA at 440-323-8416.
